96 i30 cold good -- hot good -- luke warm bad

It's almost biblical! (if you know that reference about being "spewed.")

My 96 i30 starts just fine cold. It starts just fine really hot (say, it's been off less than 1/2 hour or so). But if it's been off an hour or 2, it doesn't start unless I give the gas pedal a quick pump or two while I'm starting it. That makes it seem like it's starved for gas. It's not the filter.

I did replace the knock sensor recently -- a $5 cheapo as a trouble shoot. It worked -- for about 3 months. I know it's bad again and haven't replaced it yet -- but it never did this on the other bad sensor.

Any help out there? Thanks much.

Well, I know THIS post really piqued the forum's curiosity (he said, w/o a drop of sarcasm)...

But just in case... it was the temp coolant sensor. I had just replaced that 2 months ago, so didn't want to believe that early suspicion. Dumping fuel like a cold start-up even when it wasn't cold, I'm guessing. In any case, you guys can sleep easy now.

I have a very similar problem on my 03 GLE. It starts great cold, but when its hot it needs a blip of gas to start. Whats that sensor and how do I change it.Thanks

Easy peasy. I don't know where it is on your car, but on mine there is a pipe that comes out of the top of the radiator and goes to the engine (on the driver's side) and that pipe has a couple of little sensors that screw into the top of the pipe. I think the first, smallish, is just the sensor that goes to the gauge. But the one that you want is right behind it (closer to the driver) and it's got a little wire clip that you can undo. Then unscrew the sensor and put in the new one!. Don't use teflon tape or dope. It cost me a whopping 23 bucks and solved all of my problems. Even made my marriage better. World peace.
