96 I30 Automatic transmission Problem Help!

I was driving today and the transmission was shifting just fine and the temp was about 175 degrees. Then the transmission wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. Its stuck in 3rd, no overdrive, 2nd, or 1st but the reverse works. This happened all of a sudden, no warning and the transmission temp went up 25 degrees Is it possible a wire or line or connection came loose or does it have to be inside the transmission or possibly a transmission computer problem??

By the way, there is no check engine light.

How old is the fluid? All I can suggest is to have it flushed and hope for the best.

Is the trans sturdy enough to handle the extra power?

The trans could be in fail safe although your chances are small this is the problem. Any blinking of the O/D off light on the next key on cycle? Fail safe would put the trans in 3rd gear until the key is turned off and on again.Excessive wheelspin with sudden braking will put the trans in fail safe also.

Well guys, as the Jim Carrey movie title states, Dumb and Dumber! I lost my overdrive because 2 pins in the transmission harness were bent flat. These are the little things that can drive one crazy, although finding simple fixes are a relief
