Since there doesn't seem to be any performance ecu for the 96q, can i swap out an ecu from a 94 or 95. Will it work in my 96? I am looking for any suggestions to add performance to my basically stock q. Thanks.

1996 G50 = OBD II

1990-1995 G50 = OBD I

Now way, José!

You might experiment with increasing base ignition advance by a degree or two max, and getting some type of inline MAF voltage curve modification device..........what you want to do is fool the ecu into thinking the MAF is flowing 10% less air............lean the wot AF ratio above 4,000 rpm.

The non VVT intake cam is a split the difference version - mid way between the old two extremes. So idle is a tiny bit rougher and above 4600 rpm their is less air flow into engine...........but WOT is still very factory too rich.

Make sure that the coolant temp never goes above 195F [AC on hottest summer] as that will sap power very fast.

This is a buddy of mine. I told him that he would be able to use a late model ecu. Now I see that is not the case.

Robert- could what q45tech say be done. Assuming modifications would have to be done to keep coolant lower that 195 deg. and maybe a modified ram air under scoop that channels air to the factory box/filter. Excuse me if this seems like nontechnical babble... But can it be done???

Our ECU reprograms can not apply to 96+ Q... and doesnt look like we will be able to.

Well, I've never seen a 96 ECU. I assume it is similar in design to Y33, in which case I probably can't do anything with it. If it is similar to the 94-95 ECU I can reprogram it.

Does it have the white or blue connector?

check out NICO member Jamesmost...he is putting in a 4.08 rearend as we speak with his mechanic in NYC. I think total cost is around $600 which would give ya more pep around city driving.

http://www.splitsec.com/

PSC1-003SF has a cell resolution of 6.3 mv allowing fine tuning around the 3.8 -4.4 volt MAF range.............. cost around $285-$300

I would expect that you could gain 10-15 HP [maybe 20] with fine tuning with 17 DBTC initial advance

You can buy [from same company] similiar devices that interrupt the ignition signals to each coil and delay the advance [which you speed up initially vis CAS] thus you can fine tune advance curve.

A crude and more external box method [more expensive] of the 90-95 ecu chip upgrades.

Still for under $1000 you should be able to eventually get close to removing all the built in safety for longevity [10%].

You can even desensitize the knock sensors.

IMO the better thing woudl be to buy a greddy E-manage or something like that, thats designed to do this sort of thing! Im sure that Q45tech wouldnt have any issues setting that stuff up, since he understands ELECTRONICS and ENGINES, but most people wotn be able to set that up.

Greddy Emanages are like $400 and then maybe a few hundred for tuning on a dyno.

The e-manage needs harnesses and adapter modules and you don't want to be without the programming modules [dependent on tuner for tiny mods] while you sort out real world road from dyno imagination.

Get a bad tank of gasoline and you can just revert to normal with my proposed system.

Still cost $800-1000 for the same results [20 HP]

Most of these things are designed for 4 or 6 cylinder engines extra cost options for V8.

Still $40-$50 PER FLYWHEEL HP GAINED is about what every improvement COSTS:cone filters, exhausts...........only early ecu get by on the cheap.
