96 D21 MAF question

Just got my son a 1996 D21 2wd and it runs great until it warms up. The idle will start to bog down below 500rpms and if you make a turn and don't give it gas will die. I have read that it could be the MAF sensor which looks brand new to me(no inevitable engine grime on it). The manufacture date on the truck is 2/96 and every parts site I look at says up to 1/96 for the MAF and 2/96 not required, no part number nothing. However there is a MAF on it attached to the throttle body. Can anyone tell me what the deal with the 2/96 is.

sounds like its a transition model where they use up the last few parts from the last model

so most likely its a 1/96 for some parts and 2/96 for the rest

i use to have a Honda accord like that
