96 Altima Wont Crank

I just purchased this car and the previous owner didnt know what was wrong, they were told it needs a motor,
It wont crank, I took the starter out and tested it, works fine. Checked battery and such.
My question is what would cause the starter to not be able to turn the motor over?
(yes it clicks and all that, i am certain it is not the starter or battery related)
My thought is timing chain .... Any thoughts. SECOND question, If it is a timing chain, is there some online step by step instructions to replace the motor? (where?) I have access to a new motor.

I just checked the fly wheel and the motor is locked up so I am now changing the motor out. My 1st time on a small car, I have only worked on jeep motor swaps, anyway... do I take the transmission out too?
