I fishtailed in the snow on Saturday and when I jerked the steering wheel to correct the over steer, I immediately lost all my p/s fluid and hence my power steering. I couldn't see any fluid gushing out from beneath the car so I bought a quart of fluid, refilled the reservoir and all was good again. The steering system still holds fluid and has been working just fine again, since.
Today, I decided to go under the car and check to see where all the fluid had leaked out from and I found my steering rack bellows were full of p/s fluid. The end seals on my rack had been slightly leaking for years but I never had then dump fluid like they did when I suddenly jerked the steering. Is there anyway to replace just the end seals on both sides of my rack or is a rebuilt rack in my near future?

Though it doesn't list a source for rack overhaul, here's a thread from a search on rack overhaul..

How many miles does it have? Are you the DIY type?

I would get the rack overhauled then replace the rack bushings, new boots, and possibly new inner tie rod ends. Also, depending on mileage and condition, replace the outer tie rod ends. A front end alignment will be needed.

I've saved some money by using MOOG suspension parts where possible..

BE CAREFUL WITH POWER STEERING LINES as many are no longer available from the OEM parts suppliers.

Thanks for the info CS. I will probably purchase an entire rebuilt unit from the Rack Doctor, when I am ready to replace it.
