Guys, This has happened past five day- after having an alternator installed:When engine is cold, turn the key as normal and I get either no sound or a single click. The radio makes no sound, nor has any display. Turn key again and may or not get anything again. The Radio & display comes on now and as I turn the key again and hold it in ON position, the engine slowly drags to a full rev and fires just like nothing happens. Now, I drive it about and it fires up on first key after each stop during the day. But, if it sits for more than a couple hours, has some hesitation in starting up. Repeats thisw scenario every morning - night.

The garage said the battery was fine when they installed the altenator and I tested it each day & find it continually reads more than 14 volts. I examined/disconnected/retighten the battery terminals. Garage put a new marine marine terminal on positive post when alt was instlled.

I doubted started because I had no starting problem before the new altenator. (Got altenator because battery started losing charge requiring low amp charge daily). After searching NICO, tomorrow I will check battery voltage with all elec on to get reading. Any other thoughts before I have starter installed? Thanks in advance.

im leaning towards a starter OR a starter relay..... I would rig up your VOM to the starter solenoid and when it does that read the voltage... that should tell you what it is right away.

There is a ground that they might have removed that goes to the frame rail of the vehicle and grounds itself to the battery later on... it sits on the passenger side of the motor just like the alternator.

Thanks for the responses. I will get a VOM on it this tomorrow and check the meter while starting. What reading should I expect - 13-15 like the battery??

Hey, a loose ground would sure be welcomed right about now! Thanks for that possibility. I will include that in trouble my shooting and post finding. What does this ground look like? It is a wire/bolt I should see or a harness? Thanks. Dustkicker

I can't believe it! The problem was the battery!!!

Just to put this to bed, the problem was the battery even tho every test done said the battery & altenator was fine. Auto ZOne and one garage said I need I new starter (Others said it tested fine).

Joe had already shipped my order, else I was going to add a starter. So, here is what I did: Took my one yr old battery out of my 92Q (parked it to await my new Fuel Pmp from Joe) and put it into this 95Q last week.

The 95Q NEVER hesitated to start and did not drag once since I did that. The 92Q which always started as first turn of key B4 seemed to start weakly now. Today, I put in the new fuel Pmp and switched the batteries back.

Voila!, the 92Q fired right up! But the 95Q slowly, haltingly started again just as in these posts! Conclusion: BATTERY!!!!!

Thanks to all of you who tried to help me with this. ....Frank

It is de riguer to always replace the battery with a newmeeting OEM minimum specifications one at least when replacing an alternator.

Otherwise, a rebuilt alternator will quickly expire trying to recharge a dying battery.
