I wrote in a couple months ago about a fluttering/hesitating thing on my '95. Original transmission. Now 272k. The dealer said it was the torque converter and pretty much declared it dead. I took to a transmission shop for a second opinion. They doubted it was the TC (as did several of you guys), checked the fluid, declared it "very good", (flushes every 20k). But then the problem went away. A couple of you here mentioned external electrical connections underneath, roughly under the front seats. So ... I had the thing up on a hoist and sure enough there is a thoroughly exposed box with a half dozen electrical connectors, some with exposed multi-color wires. This doesn't look eight. I'm assuming this used to have a cover ... or something.

What is this? Is there a part (cover) missing? What's your recommendation?

Since the hesitancy/fluttering occurred after a three hour drive in steady rain, my guess is that this could have something to do with it.

Normal to see the multi-connectors at tailshaft of transmission-a stupid design that exposes them to dripping atf from leaking turbine sensor and road spray and salt damage-should have been designed a little more protected in my opinion.

To my knowlege we have never seen intermitent AT connectors from corrosion or flooding with leaky ATF, but then again we don't see much salt in South.

So there never was a cover for this set of connectors, and this exposure is normal? Very odd.

About all you can do is open each connector up, make sure they have the black or orange gasket inside, and clean all the pins if they've gotten oily. Hopefully all of the connectors snap together (no brittle, missing pieces) to make and maintain a good connection while driving.
