I'm having a speedometer problem on my 95 240sx. It will be working fine and I come to a stop at a light and when I start moving again it no longer works or it suddenly jumps to life at the wrong speed. I can tap on the plastic cover of the cluster and it will work properly again. This is happening more frequently so I need to fix this. I have never tore into a 240sx dash. Is there a guide somewhere on how to remove the cluster? I'm hoping it's a loose connection. If it's not a connection can just the speedo itself be replaced or do I have to replace the entire cluster?

Mine started "speeding up" all by itself. With the car (1990 manual) stationary, only Accessories on, within a couple of minutes the needle is at 85 MPH.
Haven't taken a crack at it yet.

Same year model, same problems, though I've found mine can be temporarily resolved by pushing in or pulling back on the trip odometer reset stalk. This tells me it's probably a case of something in the flexible PCB pad behind the instruments not making good contact. I had a look at mine when I upgraded to LED instrument lights and couldn't see anything wrong. When everything was put back together, the problem was neither better nor worse.

You can change out just the speedo part of the cluster, yes.

Search S14 cluster removal in google  . You should find something no problemo.

probably your vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on the transmission.

Don't think it's anything on the transmission as smacking the dash or just wiggling the trip odometer button thing fixes it.

Essfourteen I have not found just the speedo part anywhere, maybe your googlefu is better than mine can you post a link please?

I found how to remove the cluster but can't find A new replacement for the speedo.

Its unlikely you'll find just a speedometer. You're probably going to have to buy an entire cluster.

And my google comment was about finding out how to remove the cluster from the dash.

The cluster is very simple to take out all you need is a Phillips head screw driver and a pocket flat head screw driver to get the plugs disconnected. You can just replace the speedometer I have just replaced my tach. You might check other models because I replaced my tach circuit board with a 93 Altima tach circuit board. I don't know how to change mileage yet. Make sure you check your vss I know it sends single to the ECU then the ECU sends signal to the speedometer. There are plenty of service manuals with step by step diagnostics on this website.
