[I'm copying this from the 'infiniti general' forum in hopes that I can get some more feedback from the tech wizards.]

My 95 Q45 has recently deveolped a trans prob. It won't shift into reverse except when cold. So, starting out in the morning or after sitting for a while (~40min) it will shift into R fine. After you drive for a while (~10min) it won't shift into R. The shift control works fine ; you can move the shifter to R but the transmission stays in neutral.

When the R problem appeared I changed the trans fluid hoping against hope that this would cure it. The trans fluid was burnt (nasty smell + brown color) when I changed it about 300mi ago. This is why I avoided changing the ATF until this R problem appeared - replaceing burnt ATF with good ATF is known to cause problems (slippage). Currently, forward gears work fine with no noticeable sign of shift or slippage problems.

I plan to change the fluid again soon and replace the filter this time. My last hope for a miracle and to avoid a trans rebuild/replacement is that a partially clogged trans filter is causing this R problem.

This car has 150+Kmi on it and I don't know the maintenance history. Obviously, the ATF situation indicates that this Q was abused - maintenance wise. Where's the SPCQ (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Qs) when you need them.

So, at this point I am soliciting any bright ideas on fixes for the R problem that could save my wallet the big bite of a trans rebuild/repair. Also, pointers on transmission parts sources and trans service shops in DFW area.

At 150k all you can do is the BG Flush, BG solvent cleaner, pan drop and filter replacement, magnet clean..........but all the cheap miles are gone.

Consider you could have purchased a BMW 750/850 where the transmission would have needed replacing at 103k and cost $2,000 more than the $3k the Q will cost.

I was estatic to have gotten 183k out of my 2nd transmission even after 6 flushes with Mobil Syn ATF, 2 pan drops, and an added cooler at 45k......that meant I spent over $1500 on transmission maintenance alone since the car had 55k on it in 1995.

Obviously the 94-96 were much improved to have gotten this far with little or no maintenance.

Don't consider letting anyone rebuild the transmission as there is too much hard part wear by now from not changing the ATF [black], just get a factory selected remanned and hope it lasts half as long as the new one did.

What, no magic spell to revitalize my ailing transmission ?

Well, that's an interesting way to put it - 'the cheap miles'. You're right that there are worse situations to be in than this so I'll try the flush and then get the remaned transmission if necessary.

Well, R no longer works even when cold. Looks like it's time to schedule the transmission rebuild/replacement.

BTW, I replaced ATF, drove ~300mi, then had the transmission shop drain and replace filter, drove ~150mi. At this point there's no noticable slippage under normal operation (forward gears only, of course). I did notice some slight shudder - slippage - under hard acceleration after downshift from 3rd to 2nd or maybe it was 4th to 3rd (pedal to the floor at ~50mph).

I'll now post a new WTB topic for transmission replacement.

Check through the last few months' B/S/T... Somebody somewhere may be parting one out.

Last August when I was looking at a new tranmission, Scottsdale quoted me 2400 with a 600 credit for sending them my core. So 1800 for the engine and I'd say about 1000 to install. 200 for shipping. 3000 sounds about right.

Hey TC02,

Let me know what happens with your transmission saga - specfically where you got it replaced at. I too have 94Q, and I will have to address the transmission problem with in the next 6 to 18 months. Did you ever have a transmission flush? If so where did you get it done at? BTW, stay away from Crest Infiniti - They charged me $900 to replace my valve cover seals - I found out later they only replaced one side, and simply tightened the screws on the other.

Any expericed tech can change a transmission in 6 hours [needs help on exhaust and driveshaft for a few minutes and help taking the new unit out of the transport case and putting the core back in the case and lifting it on off the truck].........add 2 hours at most for the extra help.

What you do about replacing the radiator or adding an external cooler is extra.

Anyway installion should be less than $1,000.

We flush out BLACK ATF all the time and never have NEW problems.Flushing is not designed as a cure, but as preventative before the wear gets too much.

Waiting till 150k is about 120k too late to start. Things that could be done [and paid for by you] [but not done] during warranty are the causes of all these after warranty failures.
