My 95 Q45 has recently deveolped a trans prob. It won't shift into reverse except when cold. So, starting out in the morning or after sitting for a while (~40min) it will shift into R fine. After you drive for a while (~10min) it won't shift into R. The shift control works fine ; you can move the shifter to R but the transmission stays in neutral.

When the R problem appeared I changed the trans fluid hoping against hope that this would cure it. The trans fluid was burnt (nasty smell + brown color) when I changed it about 300mi ago. This is why I avoided changing the ATF until this R problem appeared - replaceing burnt ATF with good ATF is known to cause problems (slippage). Currently, forward gears work fine with no noticeable sign of shift or slippage problems.

I plan to change the fluid again soon and replace the filter this time. My last hope for a miracle and to avoid a trans rebuild/replacement is that a partially clogged trans filter is causing this R problem.

This car has 150+Kmi on it and I don't know the maintenance history. Obviously, the ATF situation indicates that this Q was abused - maintenance wise. Where's the SPCQ (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Qs) when you need them.

So, at this point I am soliciting any bright ideas on fixes for the R problem that could save my wallet the big bite of a trans rebuild/repair. Also, pointers on transmission parts sources and trans service shops in DFW area.

Thanks

At 150k I wouldn't call the transmission abused just average time [for 94-96] when they fail if extraordinary maintence was not performed.

Buying a car with nasty brown transmission fluid is sure to cost you soon.

If the cooler lines get plugged [reduced flow] rare on 94+ since they have 2 in parallel and a external filter, the planetary would have failed and have galled from lack of lube......the output of the cooler/heat exchanger feeds the rear planetary first then dribbles into the pan and other parts.

Sorry to hear it.

Genrally a problem like that indicates a dying valve body (right tech?)

The best advice I can give is to hope it last long enough to have some $$ saved up for new transmission.Incindentally joe at infinitipartsusa.com offers, <tremendous> discounts on factory reman trannies. Some members have had him send a transmission to their shop and negotioted a god intsall rate a decent shop saved big $$.There are warranty uncertainties/hassles with this arrangement compared to a staright retail dealer install, but the money saved makes it tempting to many.

There are a couple of shops in DFW area buried in posts here.Play around with the advanced search feature and different word combo's to find them.

BTW the above arrangement will make for a lower price than most local shops charge and you still get the factory remanufacured transmission.
