My car has been sounding like a truck with big tires lately and today when my wife opened her passenger door she said the car smells bad. I smell all around the car and the only area is passenger side rear tire area that is smelling like burnt clutch and when I threw some of my water through the spokes of the wheel it was very hot in there. I do get a bad vibration now at 70mph as well. Sound like a bad wheel bearing? Drive axle? Thanks in advance.

I think your theory is pretty good. You might also check for a stuck brake caliper on that side, or any issues with the emergency drum brakes.

Check pads first, and emergency brake cable and drum operation, especially if you live in the rust belt in the latter's case.

Thank You guys for the help! I took the wheel off and it still had a little smell from the pads area. Are the rear rotors supposed to be so thin compared to the fronts? I compressed the caliper piston all the way in and spayed everything down with mystery marvel oil as there is some rust on all the parts. What is the hole on the brake rotor for with the rubber grommet? Is there a trick to getting this rotor off? I pulled the caliper off and it would not budge..maybe rusted on or Im doing something wrong. I took it for a long ride and it seemed to be better. The pads are like new but the previous owners did not change the rear rotors and they have some gouges in them. Thanks again. :)Nel

The rubber cover is for adjusting or inspecting the rear drum brakes, which are just emergency brakes.

Check out the service manual, available here www.nicoclub.com/FSM/ for complete details. Removing the rear rotors requires using a bolt in the two threaded holes to break them away from the hub.

Good luck!
