Soliciting advice on repairs and parts sources for 95 Q45. I have browsed NICO and other web forums so I'm clued in there - thanks to all who have gone this route before me and left valuable info. Here's the story ...

Recently bought a 95 Q45, 150Kmi. Service history is unknown but I think this vehicle has been ignored for ~6mo:
  • Engine oil black
  • trans fluid brown
  • coolant low in overflow tank
  • humming fuel pump
  • loose inside rear view mirror
  • grooved rear brake rotor
  • only one key
  • light collision repair on right front
  • missing right side driving/fog light
  • right front power window non-functional
  • power antenna broken
  • missing Sony CD changer cassette
  • missing keyless entry remote
  • has Maxima wheels (http://www.transwheel.com/limages/ni46.jpg) instead of Infinity oems.
In spite of that it drives well and looks well. So, it's here to stay for a while; hopefully maintenance and repairs won't break my piggy bank. Dealer parts and service are last resort unless on sale :)

Things done:
  • Engine oil change.
  • Duplicate key.
  • Wired right front window in place. Someone removed pwr window motor and regulator !
  • Took out power antenna unit to fix.
Things to do (approximate priority) :
  • Buy one of those service manual CDs on eBay. Where else can you get them ?
  • Tighten loose inside rear view mirror. How ? No externally visible screws.
  • Transmission maintenance.
  • Figure out how to repair power antenna. Salvage yard, maybe. What other models have compatible antenna units ?
  • Replace fuel pump.
  • Differential (transaxle) fluid change.
  • Find missing parts (CD cassette, power window parts, keyless entry remote).
  • Fix power window in right front door. Salvage yard, maybe.
  • Wheels & tires (graduate to 16in or 17in). Will inexpensive (but nice looking) aftermarket wheels be Ok ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...87058 http://www.discounttiredirect....ize=2
Questions for the infinitipartsusa.com folks in case they read this ...

I found the following parts at http://infinitipartsusa.com :

Code: Select all

  Transmission Service Kit - - Q45, 1995 $ 79.98 Bendix Front Brake Pads - - Q45 1994-1996 $ 54.82 Bendix Rear Brake Pads - - Q45 1994-1996 $ 47.80 Front brake pads - 41000K - Q45 1994-1996 $ 64.49 Rear Brake Pads - 44000K - Q45 1994-2001 $ 56.24 Front brake hardware kit - - Q45 1995-2001 $ 45.70 Rear Brake hardware kit - 44080 - Q45 $ 45.70 Metal-Matrix Front Brake Pads - - Q45 '90-'95 $ 47.27 Fuel Pump - - Q45 1990-1996 $234.99
The Transmission Service Kit listed for $39.99 on the part detail page but was shown at $79.98 in the shopping basket ; why ?

What is in the "brake hardware kit" ? Is this necessary for brake pad replacement ?

What's the difference between the Bendix brake pads, Metal-Matrix, and the 'no-name' ones ? Which of these include the brake pad sensors ?

Any parts other than the fuel pump needed to stop the humming from under the rear deck ?

Additional parts needed but not listed at http://infinitipartsusa.com :
  • Brake rotors
  • Power antenna unit or replacement plastic rope (toothed band).
  • Map light bulbs.
  • Driving/fog light units (under the bumper ones).
  • Right front door power window motor and regulator.
Thanks in advance for suggestions and guidance.

tco2, you have done a good job reading the posts, but there are a few things that have slipped through the cracks. i'll try to fill some of them for you.

    (1) See if you can find an Envirolution (http://www.envirolution.com) machine near you. If you can, you may need to run it through two or three times while it is connected. I have seen sludge it has brought out from engines that didn't have the oil changed for +10,000 miles. One time is ~$200. Negotiate the repeats.(2) Prepare for new transmission. SD has one with 35K miles on it for sale in the STB forum. I would be on that like white on rice.(3) You are probably also missing the spacer between the mirror and windshield. Cheap from Joe.(4) New rear rotors if pads worn to backing plate. The specifications are on the board for when they can be turned.(5) Get from Joe. Virtually impossible to find used.(6) If OEM, find XA-10B carrier before going farther. They are no longer manufactured so they are rare.(7) Try Remotes Unlimited .(8) Save your money for an OEM from Joe. There is a wait until they get enough orders to print. Assumed you searched for minimanual?(9) May need new assembly. Don't know.(10) Again, several flushes with a pan drop, unless you want to proceed directly to new unit.(11) Mast or unit from Joe. Why replace with worn unit?(12) Probably too weak. Get OEM, t model forged if you can, for less money.(13) Probably the clips not sold with non OEM kits. Ask Joe.(14) The controller if you wait too long.(15) Call Scottsdale Infiniti parts and very nicely discuss your needs. They are your friend, so send list first, and order some of what you need so as not to waste their time.

When you get it repaired, you will be amazed at how much better it will drive. I am betting the PS and Brake fluid need changing. All the rubber, motor transmission mounts and exhaust hangers are probably brittle also. We won't go under the plenum yet. Fuel and air filters are cheap.

    Budget well.

Hi! I have a 1995 Q as well (bought in 1998 - lease return at an Infiniti dealer) and have some suggestions on a few of your items that I have had experience with. I am not an expert by any stretch, though!

    1. If your transmission fluid is brown or smells burnt, this is a high priority for you to take care of. Do a full flush (at the right place with the right equipment), followed by a transmission filter replacement (it is inexpensive - don't get talked into a "filter cleaning"), followed by another full flush and fill with Mobil 1 Synth ATF or the Nissan ATF. Do this soon! Transmission "repair" is non-existent - the usual solution is a complete replacement with a reman transmission. I spent about US $2850 for this replacement (labor and parts) some months back and do not want to do it again!

    2. Do NOT buy the "CD Infiniti service manual" on eBay - it is a piece of junk. Find an Infiniti original manual instead - unfortunately, it is out of print for 1995 Q, so Joe cannot help yet, but he is taking orders to see if he can get a reprint done. I believe that http://www.books4cars.com has some 1995 Q45 service manuals left - I finally broke down and ordered one from them a few days ago (at $199, this is not cheap!).

    3. Humming from the fuel pump means that it needs replacement. You may want to do this before it damages the fuel pump controller - which is a much more expensive repair!

    4. Power antenna mast replacement is easy - part costs about $39 new from any Infiniti dealer. If the motor is burnt out, that is a different story and I do not know what is entailed.

    5. If your brake rotors are "grooved", the previous owner let the pads wear out totally (amazing)! You need to replace pads and rotors quickly - for the sake of safety, if nothing else. I would tend to stick with the Infiniti OEM pads even if you pick some other rotor brand, but others here do use different brands. I have purchased (not yet installed - argh!) rotors from http://www.irotors.com since the price for drilled and slotted Bradi rotors from them is very low and the workmanship of the machining looks good!

    6. I doubt that Maxima wheels are stong enough for the Q. If cost is a concern, then you can often find used, good-condition, original Infiniti wheels on eBay for less than going with after-market wheels.

Good luck with your Q! I enjoy mine for sure, although I wish I had time to look after it better.

For your remote, get on ebay and find the FCC number. Then goto remotes unlimited to get a new remote. They are only 59.95. You can find a used one on ebay for 80, and maybe get a new one for 120. They dont look like OEM, but still work the same.

Antenna mast you can get on ebay and get one from about 20. You may not find one for a 94, but ones for the later models should work fine.
