HI,

I new to this forum but, I'm having a problem with my 95 Q45 (160,000 miles) starting and accelerating. I've changed the plugs, fuel filter, and gotten the fuel system cleaned. When I start the car sometimes it will not start unless I pump the gas paddle. Also, there are times when the car does not accelerate well and the idle is low. I'm thinking the problem maybe with the fuel pump because I can hear it and I was told that the fuel pumps go bad on these cars. Has anyone else had experience with this same problem? How can I check the fuel pump and are after market fuel pumps ok?

No, aftermarket pumps are not ok to use because the pump resistance needs to match the electronic pump speed control module. [which costs much more than pump to replace].

Every V8 car has fuel pumps that fail, many way before 160k and 12 years.

My first car in 1967 ate fuel pumps every year, my next in 1971 every 2 years My 1981 every 3 years......my 90 Q every 7 years seems wonderful to me.

Try checking the air filter, it could be really old. Also try cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner.

Or better yet, check the MAF connector, including the wiring first.

What is the MAF and what cleaner do you recommend?

Welcome to NICO, Todd. I had a similar issue recently on my 94 and it was the MAF connector that was causing it. Follow the instructions on q45.orgfor cleaning it as a first step to solving your problem.

Few MAF sensors go bad unless air filter change intervals are abused, or the filter is non-OEM. Check the connector first, including the wiring. Running change in mid 1994.

Kragens carries a cleaner specifically made for MAF called "Mass Air Flow cleaner."It's a red bottle.
