It's hard to tell from your description (at least to me) whether the grinding noise is occurring ONLY when you are starting the engine ... or if it's constant (even while the engine is running).
I do not know much (so take this with a grain of salt) about cars, but, it seems to me if your starter pinion gear were misaligned or stuck in the out position, it would (I'm guessing) grind against the flywheel & make a constant grrrreesrrrssesseecchessg sound.
Perhaps one way to tell if this is ocurring ex post facto, might be to peel back the flywheel cover plate behind the starter motor & starter solonoid assembly (after removing the two rear engine-to-transmission gussets) to take a look at the gear teeth themselves for abnormal wear.
I don't know how to interpret normal vs abnormal wear on the flywheel teeth, so I can merely post a photo of mine taken just now for this purpose.
