It's hard to tell from your description (at least to me) whether the grinding noise is occurring ONLY when you are starting the engine ... or if it's constant (even while the engine is running).

I do not know much (so take this with a grain of salt) about cars, but, it seems to me if your starter pinion gear were misaligned or stuck in the out position, it would (I'm guessing) grind against the flywheel & make a constant grrrreesrrrssesseecchessg sound.

Perhaps one way to tell if this is ocurring ex post facto, might be to peel back the flywheel cover plate behind the starter motor & starter solonoid assembly (after removing the two rear engine-to-transmission gussets) to take a look at the gear teeth themselves for abnormal wear.

I don't know how to interpret normal vs abnormal wear on the flywheel teeth, so I can merely post a photo of mine taken just now for this purpose.

You may want to check out the neutral safety switch on the trans. My '90 Q made a similar noise when running when I shifted into park. Don't know if this is your problem, but hope it helps.

ok i narrowed it down to electrical something is shorting and cranking the starter this only happened after the new starter was installed, still happening after 2nd new starter installed and new ignition switch (electric not the cylinder)

Sounds to me like it should the starter relay.. If memory serves the starter relay is right by the windshield wiper motor...

The relay is the "blue box" next to wiper motor. It's a common failure part .

To further help others out, here is a diagram of where that blue starter relay lies, plus a photo of the starter solonoid.

Its pretty common that would go bad.. Since its near the wiper motor, and water can easily drain down there.....

Hows the transmission doin...? Are you gonna get the higher stall?

A lot of us had problems vewing attachments with the http://www.nissaninfiniticlub.com web address but when we changed it to the http://www.nicoclub.com web address all the attahcments came back.

So usehttp://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=92359and do not usehttp://www.nissaninfiniticlub....92359

The other thing that works if you insisnt on using the longer web address is to go to youjr control panl and reset youre forum cookiies constantly but that is a pain in the azz.

Hope ths helps

by the way should someone change the title to reflect the true content
