My wife just called and said there is a knocking sound. She checked the oil level. (I just changed oil on Sunday.)

She said that it is well ABOVE the normal range, meaning that I accidentally put in too much oil somehow. (I've never had that happen before, I checked the level, don't know what I did wrong.)

Anyway, could this have hurt the engine? Could it be that I need to drain some and this tapping/knocking will go away?

If that's not the probable culprit, what are the usual suspects?

The car is at 131K. In the fall, when I bought it, I had it run through a Nissan computer, posted the results here and you guys said they looked good. Also, the plugs need changed.

That's about all the background of the car I can tell you.

If the oil level is high enough, the oil will get frothed by the counterweights on the crankshaft. Bubbles in the oil will effectively reduce oil pressure and lubrication, and knocking could occur.

Daedalus,

What's a ballpark price for DIY replacement of shocks, if I get the ones that everyone recommends (Tokico? can't remember name).

The shocks themselves are about $300 for all 4, but I also strongly recommend doing all rubber bushings and dust boots, which are another $200 roughly. It's been a while though. But you have the active model? You would need to buy some conversion pieces. In that case I think I remember reading maybe $1000-1200. Check with Scottsdale...they had an active conversion kit at one point.

Back to your first problem, I don't want to imply frothing is the only risk, as there are others. Blown seals comes to mind. Hopefully the car is back to normal after you correct the oil level.

Thanks,

What about if I don't want to convert the active? I think that my actuators are working fine. I read somewhere on this board that if the car is riding somewhat rough, but the system is showing no warnings and seems to work (i.e. raising and lowering) that you should be able to just replace the shocks themselves.

Is conversion a DIY job for somone with limited experience?
