95 Pathfinder transmission problems

I have a 95 Nissan Pathfinder 4X4. Just this past Saturday it started to make a winding noise that gets louder as you press in the gas. The noise goes away when you shift in gear and it appears as you drive away but it dissapears as soon as it shifts in second gear and there on out. Any help would be great.
