XE 4X4, 162,000 miles. AT was rebuilt around 120K. Still shifts *ok*, but I've got drive train vibration that isn't shaft, u-joints or rear. So, I'm thinking TC. Recent other symptoms: 1) once in OT and locked, letting up on throttle, it comes out of lock up; give it some gas and it locks up again. 2) at speeds approx 40 and lower, when locked, give it a little gas and it unlocks w/out downshifing out of OD (like it always did). However, at highway speeds, when accelerating, it won't unlock and then downshifts.

If and when I search for a used and not previously rebuilt trans, what is the latest year AT that will match? A lisitng in a rebuilder's catalog seemed to imply the same AT is used in current models. That would be good news, but hard to believe. Since it does shift cleanly and the fluid looks perfect would just replacing the TC be an option.

TC vibration is not that common on nissans. I would recheck the shaft closely, that is very common on RWD nissans.

On your shift problem try getting some codes out of the ECM see if you got a TPS problem going on.

Thanks for the reponse. I recognize you from the alt. newsgroup.

Since this was a Cottman rebuild, does that change your comment about TC vibration?

If I carefully check the driveshaft, other than U-joint issues, exactly what am I looking for?

Re codes, I'll appreciate an explanation of TPS.

The low vibration, most noticeable between 55 & 70, feels like a U-joint just starting to bind. I had the enitre shaft done a while ago by a shop I "trust" and it was supposedly balanced by a specialist in Pennsauken, NJ. Is is possible I just got a bad job or got ripped off?

I will really appreciate advice you can offer re my other question about replacing with a newer model year AT. TIA

Can you link me to that news group. I sometimes contribute to other smaller groups but cant recall if thats one of them.

The shaft it self may be ok but take a look at the senter support bearing while the vehicle is on the ground see if it is sagging excessivly. Yes a aftermarket rebuild anything is possible including the TC vibration. Factory rebuilds dont have that problem.

As far as years of trans you can use I am not 100% everything is the same through all years but the trans and transfer visually appear almost the same up till about 2000. The wiring although is different on 96 and up. The connectors on it are located near the rear of the trans where as on yours they are on the passenger fender well. Worst case you would likely have to swap all the electrical over including the solonoid pack inside the trans.
