My wifes 95 maxima when cold will run for a second then stall it will do this a few times but I usually just give it a little gas and it will stay running.

Sometimes when going up a hill it will lack power for a few seconds.

Sometimes when idling in park the idle speed will fluctuate.

I'm thinking it is a fuel issue, like a fuel pump. There is no check engine light, the car has 144k miles and is in prestige condition.

Has anyone had a similar problem? If so what was the fix? This is my first Nissan, thankyou for any help.

As I understand it, this is a common issue. My 97 I30 would do the same thing on cold mornings. From reading the forums here, there are a few possible culprits: fuel pressure, old injectors (associated with a strong un-burnt fuel smell), old spark plugs, old coils, dirty/failing IACV, etc. I got the plugs all replaced. I replaced the fuel filter (which didn't solve the problem). I then removed and cleaned up the IACV (idle air control valve) which was VERY dirty. This helped my idle smooth out a lot.

I do know if the idle speed jumps around when you are in gear (like at a traffic light), this is a function (or malfunction) of the IACV, so its likely those two issues are more than just correlated. My car would dip as low as 490 RPM and high as 700 RPM just sitting at the light, with the AC compressor off. When the AC was running, the idle was smooth like it should be, since it uses a different valve on the IACV.

Then before it got cold someone rammed into the rear bumper and the resulting back ache I got (and still have occasionally) made it so I couldn't stand sitting in the drivers seat anymore, so I can't say I solved the problem. The car belongs to my brother and he just got some heavy snow-- I should ask how it is starting these days.
