I've noticed a bad vibration in my steering wheel when going 65 to 75 MPH (1995 Maxima). It's most noticable when my foot is on the gas pedal. The tires are new and I've had them balanced twice thinking that would solve the problem. The engine seems fine (205K+). Since I notice it more when my foot is on the gas pedal, could it be that the engine is sputtering at a certain RPM that's not noticable when driving under 65 MPH? Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When was the last time you had an alignment?

I would check the suspension components, and wheel bearings. I've also seen a bent wheel cause a problem similar to this.

I found out that some tires have bald spots due manufacturing defects or wheels locking up just once to create a bald spot. My 89 maxima does the same found out it has a bald spot.

Check front end to see if parts are worn/loose/damaged
Jack up wheel and put hands on tires at east and west position to see if movement occurs
Same way with hands on north south position on tires
Make sure steering wheel is locked
If movement occurs on east west position-could be bad tie rods (inner or outer)
If movement occurs on north south position-could be bad control arms/ball joints
Watch front end while moving the tires to see if something is loose
Consult FSM as well

Two cases of that over the past couple of weeks with the I30 and Maxima but different problems.

1) My son drove the 99 I30 into a wet area where the driver side wheel became stuck in mud. Some mud was caked on the inside of the wheel causing it to become out of balance. I made him remove the wheel and clean the mud off. Problem fixed.

2) Purchased a set of wheels and tires a couple of months ago from a 2008 Maxima for $280 for the 99 Maxima SE 5-speed. I though I made a nice deal until two if the wheels could not be balanced. Two of the wheels were warped as if the 2008 Maxima had slid against a curb. Now I know why the previous owner agreed to sell the wheels cheap. I had to move the warped wheels to the rear to reduce the bounce to a level that would allow the car to be driven over 65 MPH. I've since ordered two refinished wheels from an eBay seller for $120 each..
