First we have to assume that the battery is good and connections are clean and tight. The from your description, it could be the Ignition Switch (on the other side of the steering column) or the Ignition Lock Cylinder (the slot where the key goes in).
To access the Ignition Switch, you have to take out the lower cover and metal plate at the base of the instrument panel as it meets the steering column. The steering column has a clamshell - upper and lower cover secured by Philips screw. Once the clamshell has been removed, you will see the ignition switch on the LH side.
Check the mounting screw for the ignition switch as they may be loose. Also check the wires going to the ignition switch. If OK, take out the Ignition Switch and manually turn it (use a screw driver and insert into the slot of the switch) and see if the car starts without hesitation. Insert the key into the lock cylinder and see if you can turn it smoothly. Look for sign of excessive play.
