95 Max - Automatic Transmission Shifter Suddenly Hard to Move

I was parked today with the engine idling briefly (after a short drive) and suddenly when I put my foot on the brake and moved the shifter between Park and Drive it was hard to move. This has never happened before! The car seems to drive perfectly, but the shifter still doesn’t move easily between Park, Neutral, Drive, 1, and 2. [1995 Maxima, 250K easy miles, original owner, no repairs ever to the engine or automatic transmission, well-maintained since I bought it in 1995].

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey, did this happen just the one time or it's been doing it since? Maybe a penny got caught in there and is mucking up the free movement of the gear selector. Maybe the brake pedal position sensor or related stuff isn't working properly. This could be a park/ neutral switch or something related. Most of this stuff is pretty accessible in either the pedal area or the center console area.

You might want to look at the Factory Service Manual (FSM). This link is to each chapter, the FWD chapter is the foreward and has a table of contents:
