95 max AT stuck in P

when i park it and put in P even on a level surface it won't let me shift out unless i "jiggle" the steering wheel side to side. what could be the problem?

that doesnt make much sense. is your foot on the brake? there is a cab,e running from the shifter to the column to prevent the key from being removed unless in park but i doubt that would work the opposite way.
