Searched and can’t find same problem on any Nissan motor.

I have a friend that just bought a 95 240 a few weeks back. We don’t know a lot about the history on this car but we do know that the previous owner changed the water pump after it went out. The lady said it began to have an overheating issue soon after and only when it was driven for 10 miles or more. So she had the t-stat, radiator and a full flush performed, the problem was still there. An older guy bought the car a "burped" the car and it was fine, he then put the car back up for sale, this is when my friend bought the car.

He has been DD the car from the time he bought it with no problems, just fixing/replacing routine maintenance parts. A few days ago he said he heard a light ticking noise. Yesterday he had his roommate look at it at work (Honda dealer). They changed the oil, plugs and wires. When the car started back up it made a louder tick/knocking noise. They checked some things and found nothing, so they started it back up. It did the same thing so they tried to give it a little gas thinking maybe the tensioner/chain was loose due to low oil pressure. It was fine until about 4500rpm and the timing jumped 180 out and the car shut off. They put it back to cylinder 1 TDC and realigned the distributer to match. After start up it did the same thing 3 more times.
I was not there when any of this work was done so this is just what I’m being told, I don’t know what could be causing the problem (never had that one before) and don’t know where to start without being in front of the car.

sounds like BS to me. the distributor on that ka24de is driven from the intermediary timing gear, for it to jump 180deg out the lower timing chain would need to jump position or the gear on the dizy would need to break. either way the car would not start a second time let alone a third. if it were the dizy gear it would be plain to see when you went to reinstall it, if it were the chain the valves would smash into the pistons.
