My wife owns a 1995 J30 with 125,000 miles on it that she bought new.

While having our local expensive Infiniti dealer do the 120,000 mile major service he told her that the car should have the timing belt replaced based only upon the milage. They want $800 to do the job. We hope to keep this very nice J30 for another year or so since it runs so well. What do you guys recommend?

Thanks for any response.

Ray

We also own a 1994 Q45 that I have owned since new. We love Infiniti

your timing belt should have been changed at 105,000 miles.

if your still on the original timing belt, get it replaced NOW.

if the belt was replaced in the past, then dont worry about it.

If you cant verify that the belt has been changed through the dealer or receipts by the original owner then go ahead and get it done. Might as well be safe than sorry.

If the timing belt was done at a Infiniti dealer, that sticker (Q45tech mentioned) should be mounted usually on top of the filter or air box within plain sight. If you have any doubts that your timing belt hasn't been changed, than get it changed, because if it goes, your looking at an engine replacement cost.

BTW...welcome to NICO!!!

Thanks for the responses.

I should have made it clearer. She bought the J30 brand new so we know that the belt has not been replaced. My question is more about the risk of not replacing it with the idea that we will put maybe 15,000 miles on it over the next year or so before we buy a new Infiniti.

If the chance of failure is very low I might take the risk. Conversely if the risk of failure over the time mentioned is high then it would be worth the $800 to get it fixed right away.

What do you think?

get it replaced.

there is no guarantee the belt will last another day. it could last a few years, it could break on the way home from the shop.

also, with the cars mileage, if you were to try and sell the car without evidence of the timing belt replacement, no one will want it, or will want you to deduct the cost from selling price due to being overdue.

that will hurt you severly. the timing belt is essential, and if i noticed that you neglected it, i would question every aspect of the cars maintainence history, and be very turned off.

the fact of the matter is that you are 20,000 miles overdue for a CRITICAL maintainence item.

you should consider yourself lucky that you havent destroyed the motor yet.

hope im making this clear.

It's a lot of money, but $800 for a belt change on a J at a dealership sounds pretty fair.
