Based on an experience with a dirty MAF in my '97 Ford F-150, cleaning your's is a good idea. There are links out there to do-it yourself MAF cleaning instructions.
In my case a dirty one caused intermittent and very subtle missing/stumbles near the shift points under light acceleration, plus some intermittent and pretty violent jerking at freeway speeds in the 65 to 75 mph range. At first the problem occurred very infrequently and was barely noticeable, before it slowly got progressively worse.
It took about four trips to a local Ford dealership within a two week period to fix the problem, and even then the service rep flat-out lied about the real fix, after they first replaced the O2 sensor, and then the plugs, and then the plug wires, and after which I stopped paying for their guess work.
Dirty fuel or air filter, or low fuel pressure?
A smooth idle is a good sign, and obviously an engine doesn't need as much air/fuel at idle.
