I picked up the car yesterday after having the timing belt, water pump, and accessory belts replaced. The alternator belt popped off before I'd even gone 5 miles! Got it towed back to the shop where they put on a new one, and it wouldn't stay either. The mechanic and I noticed that the fan and it's pulley were wobbling, so they're ordering another water pump. Am I looking at a defective water pump, or should I be looking for something that could have caused it to fail?

Cheers,Bob

More likely a bad idler pully.

Idler pulley, no question...

Some of the noise was definitely the alternator belt, and since I tightened it I still have a little squealing when I start the engine (usually just a short squeak), which I agree is probably the idler pully. It's pretty 'wobbly' without a belt on it. I'm just guessing that there shouldn't be any side-to-side play in that thing...
