95 g20 stuck in gear?

My roommate just picked up a pretty sweet black 95 g20 with a manual transmission. Only problem is that it seems to be stuck in 3rd gear (maybe 2nd). I can get it started, but only by revving it up and slipping the clutch until it gets rolling. The shifter *feels* like you're pulling it out of gear and changing to another one, but it never actually disengages the gear its stuck in. The clutch DOES disengage when you press it in, but you still can't shift to another gear.

I already pulled the lower crossmember that the engine mounts to and checked the back engine mount because I heard if that dies, it messes with the shift linkage. No such luck, it actually appears to be a pretty new mount back there.

The kid I bought it from says the car was an auto that he converted to manual. After the conversion it drove fine, shifted fine, etc. but the clutch was slipping. So afew weeks ago he pulled the transmission and replaced the clutch with a new OEM nissan one. After reassembling everything the car wouldn't shift out of gear, which leads me to believe he just put something back together wrong, rather than something being busted.

I'm going to go look around the engine bay and see if anything else looks wrong, but any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I might just pull the transmission and see if he put something on backwards I suppose. Although this FWD transmission doesn't look nearly as easy to pull as my s13 one

Check the shift linkage at the transmission, seems like the first place for a problem to me.

I just pulled the transmission... took about 2 hours. A little longer than my s13! haha, but bad news I think. I can't seem to put it in neutral regardless of where I position the linkage. Gonna probably bring the transmission to a shop tomorrow and have them check it out. My roommate's girlfriend works for Jasper Engines, and they can rebuild transmissions there too.

So with the transmission off the car, you still can't move linkage around to simulate normally shifting? If not, something is definately wrong with the transmission. Fork might be bent as well.

yep, I disassembled the transmission and 3rd gear is bent on the main shaft and doesn't spin anymore... transmission is fubar'd. got a new transmission and engine from a friend for FREE today though so I'm picking that up tonight, installing the transmission tonight, and now have a spare motor to build up!
