It's been a while since I've posted anything, but I'm back.I'm currently looking at a 95 240sx that the owner says has a bad head gasket. what are the things I should check? How much is diffrent working on this engine compared with the ka24 that I had in my 90? Thanks for any info. Surf!

Anybody know about these engines? When I opened the oil fill cap it had milkshake on it, but the crankcase oil looks fine. he said it blew the hose towards the back of the engine, I'm thinking heater hose? anyways he said it got up to the H on the temp gauge, before he noticed it, then he shut it off. I talked with the shop that it was taken to, they said bad head gasket. Any info would be a help. Thanks Surf!

How many miles are on the car? The motor is different than the one in your 90 but not much. If you have the tools, space and experience you can rebuild the engine for about $600 - $700. This price will be determined mainly by the cost of reworking the head. Generally you should be able to rework the head, replace the timing set, water pump, thermostat, bearings and rings for that amount. If it is lower milage, pull the head, put a strait edge on it and if the head isn't warped just replace the gasket. You can do this but I would never tear the head off without at least replacing the timing set. Too much work to go in a second time. I rebuilt my engine when the head gasket blew. I had no choice the rings stuck inside their grooves.

On a second note, I really like the 95 and with a blown head gasket you should get a great deal on the car. I bought my 89 for $900 and now it runs like new and I have a total of $1600 in it. If it is in good shape I would figure paying around 3k or maybe less. Good Luck!

The car has 170k showing, I do my own work so pulling the head isn't a problem plus I have a friend with a machine shop, complete valve job, resurface the head for $125. The car is really pretty clean, everything but leather, for $2800. So even after the other parts I put in, figure maybe having $3500 invested doesn't seem to bad of a deal for a 95. Do you know what the diffrence between this car and a SE is, as in equipment. Thanks Surf!

Even with the mileage, that's a pretty darn good deal. The differences are very slight.

The 95 SE will have 5-lug alloy wheels, white gauge faces, front lip spoiler, rear spoiler and a rear anti-sway bar. These are the ONLY differences that WILL ALWAYS be there. The only thing that will make it a better car functionally, is the sway bar. You can pick one up from a junk yard for less than $50!!

The rest of the options can be had in either trim model. Power windows/locks, sun/moon roof, ABS, VLSD, Clarion stereo.... etc...etc were all available for base and SE models.

SEs have the following that is worth mentioning:

Thicker Sways (LEs DO NOT have a rear sway bar)Thicker Struts Better Spring Rates5-Lug Hubs and 16" alloys Optional LSD 1.5 way

Then theres a bunch of interior mods that I dont care about.

The VLSD is also available on the base model.

The sways are not any thicker... the SE just has a rear, where the others don't.

The heavier duty struts were available on the base model also.

There is no 95 LE.

This I'm not positive about.... but the springs are the same, so I'm not sure what you mean by a 'better' spring rate. Obviously the heavy duty struts have a stiffer rate.... but since either strut is available for each trim model.. this doesn't really matter.

I'm picking it up on sunday, should have it back on the road the following weekend providing work isn't to busy and I finish all the christmas shopping. I just noticed the driving mom's car in my avitar, where did that come from?

Uhh two of my friends have a 95 base model which you could call an LE? Either way I thought the front bars where thicker on the SEs. I know the springs are slightly better... we compaired mine to my friends 95 SE and his where wound differently.

I was mainly pointing out what the SEs came with standard over the standard LE (aka base model) package.

AFAIK the s14 LE (excluding 95, as there is no such animal) are the top trim package models. They came with leather and all the bells and whistles standard.

The 95 ONLY came in SE or base models. All of the options were available for both, EXCEPT for the front lip spoiler, rear spoiler, rear anti-sway bar, white-face gauges, and 5-lug alloys. If you have ANY of these options from the factory it is an SE.

If cold water was put into it while it was still hot the head could be cracked and would have to be replaced or possibly repaired depending where the crack is. I'd have the head checked for cracks while it's off.
