I got some OEM rings for my KA rebuild, and found that the brass colored expander rings have a small piece of wire in them. Is this part of the packaging, or should it stay on when I put it on the piston?(The old ones didn't have them but I don't know if they changed the design since then, so I just want to make sure)

Nice question. I do not know the answer to this but I will see what I can dig up. Thanks for the challenge.

Got the answer from the horse's mouth (Nissan Tech at local dealer) - you leave them in.

Good to know, I have little experience building motors (I lack the free time and motivation). I emailed one of the other Moderators but he was dragging his feet on responding.

Good luck with your build.
