Hi everyone here goes. I've had the car a while and it has been a garage queen. The audio system is the factory CD with 2 Clarion Amps under the rear shelf. The head unit tuned, seeks, loads cd's presets work, illumination including dimmer work, but no sound comes out of the speakers. I looked under the hood at the audio fuse, and under the kick panel at the audi fuse. Checked a few grounds near the strut towers and on the insides of the unibody under the hood and nothing. I don't know how to yank the radio out to see if there are any fuses back there or not behind the dash behind the radio. I know there are 2 screws in the center console. one behind the ashtray, I tried yanking after undoing those but the setup goes nowhere. I have no sound, this is my daily driver as I debate whether to sell it or not and I am kinda pissed with no sound now. Dealt with it for a while but now I am getting perturbed. Anyone please help. I really want sound. I don't think it is the deck b/c if it was then nothing else would work I would think. I don't think it is the amps as I even removed them, checked the wiring around them and everything is fine, they don't even smell burnt. Anyone please help.

Thanks guys.

Sounds like an amp problem. It wouldnt be your audio fuse because your headunit is turning on, so your remote turn on lead could be bad, or the amps are bad. Or I dunno if the OEM Nissan amps have fuses (probably not), but thats a possiblity too. To take the radio out you have to pull up the shifter trim and the ac control trim (just pop off with metal clips) then there are 5 screw two on the top two on the bottom, and one behind the ash tray, but unless its aftermarket you will not find anything.

I would try to test it with another headunit, But I also have multiple HU's at my disposal.

If that fails to produce sound, with all correct amp turn on wires and grounds connected, I would then disconnect the factory amps and check continuity to ground on each of the speaker outputs form the factory amp. you can find a schmmatic here. http://www.240sx.org/faq/index.htmlclick on the link for Bypassing the stock S14 amps.have fun, hope yhou get your stereo working.

Okay well here's the update all. Tried a new headunit from Nissan, no dice. Bypassed the factory amps and it worked only low volume. Got a replacement set of amps from a member who said his worked fine, undid my bypass, and still nothing. Is it possible this other member sold me a set that didn't work, or what else should I check?

Do you have a multi-meter? You should test to see if the power wires in the amp harness are live when if both fuses are good.

My factory amps started messing up. I baught a Sony headunit and took out the factory amps and hardwired them all. The nissan factory unit only puts out about 5 watts per channel. Aftermarket is the way to go. You can even use an eq to boost your factory speakers if you wanted to.

I'm confused, when you said calrion amps, did you mean the OEM ones? If so, they probably failed, or the amp turn on lead failed.

I say just yank out the OEM HU, replace it with an aftermarket one of your choice, bypass the clarion amps, get new speakers.

There you go, now it's 10 times better

Okay well I don't want an aftermarket deck. I am not trying to wake up the neighborhood with ridiculous volumes, and I want a factory look. I don't like the deck sticking out even 1/4 inch more than it is supposed to. Had I wanted that the fix would be very easy.

I don't have a multi meter, but which two pins would I need to test, any idea? I am sure I can go get one and try that at least. Anyone have any idea where the turn on lead goes to under the dash?

If you like the look of a factory HU, I recommend that you take a look at Nakamichi HUs. They're a bit pricey, but their quality is excellent

I have 2 like new factory decks in front of me and 2 sets of factory amps. I'd rather figure out what the issue is with what I have. Though you are definitely right about nakamichi, great company and products, just not quite what I am looking for though. If I didn't have all of this stuff in front of me I'd think about it.

Anyway.... anyone familiar with the turn on lead etc and if there is a seperate relay for these factory amps or maybe a fuse I am just not seeing?

I'm sure you can find the wiring in a search. If you do, hook up a power inverter. Connect one of the hu's and then hook up a speaker to every channel to make sure they all work. Then add the amp into the mix(don't forget to ground it) and run the speaker off of each of those channels. Process of elimination.

If that seams like it will take too long, most stereo shops will do it for you, but at about $10-$15 per amp. You can buy the power inverter for less than that though.
