I have a 1995 240sx base model with just over 100k.
As possibly unrelated background: I recently replaced the head gasket. To be perfectly honest, there was nothing wrong with the head gasket. I had been having a problem that I initially thought was a bad thermostat (overheating and losing coolant from god knows where), so I replaced it and there was no improvement. All my friends, online and onlife, thought it was a head gasket and so did I, so I bit the bullet and cracked out the wrenches. Not too bad a project except that the way Nissan attaches the intake is coo-coo. So I put it all back together and there was no improvement. So I get another thermostat and BOOM its fine. I wipe the egg off of my face, thank God that I don't need the car to get to work, and chaulk it up to experience.
Now for the current problem: So I drive it for about 2 months after the head gasket repair (less than 500 miles) and one morning I pull out of the garage for a drive and she keeps stalling. I look at the gas gauge and it is REALLY low, sow I drive to the gas station, but a tank of gas does not help.
And now for the symptoms: She starts and idles high. The idle is not right but it is not absolutely horrible either. But, on acceleration she stumbles, misfires, bucks and hesitates, and she WILL NOT rev of 2200rpm.
What I know and what I think I know: I think it is the ignition coil. I did a search which said that ign coils on S14s are in the distributor. I have an S14 right? Can the coil be replaced? Do I need a whole new distributor? I put an analog meter on the coil like the manual (haynes I think) says and it zeroed, but the manual has a digital meter showing 1.1 as normal -- how does that translate to an analog meter? What other problems are possible? I have no idea what codes are reading or how to find that out.
Thanks in advance for any help
Andy
