95 240 sx 5 spd. When I depress the clutch and turn the key I'm getting a faint buzzer sound, sometimes stronger or just nothing. I've even held down the switch with my hand while turning the igniton switch. The clutch throw does fully depress the botom switch. The pad on the back of the pedal arm seems to be intact. I can't tell if there is a worn spot on it becasue there is too much of me and not enough room to see behind the pedal.

The buzzing sound is in the dash and sounds like it's just to right of the steering column. While praticing my contortionist routine I noticed a second switch at the top of the clutch. The clutch arm doesn't make solid contact with this one. The one at the bottom is definitely getting fully depressed. The problem is intermittent but it is getting worse. Two days ago I spent about 4 mins trying to start it without success and last night it stated on almost every attempt. I was going to check for continuity/open closed circuit but a thunderstom was coming in very quickly and I was having trouble releasing the electrical connector on the back of the switch and even more trouble extracating myself with lighting beginning to play around way to close for comfort.

Also cognitive disconnect here. To tighten the Alternator belt does the tightening screw back off CCW or go forward CW rotation. I did notice that the front adjuster lock bolt was not tightened down to begin with. It was dark by the time I got to this and removing the breather hose may have provided clearer picture. ( I do have the pdf manual but unclear how the long bolt turns to tighten) I have a belt squeal on acceleration at bout 3000 rpm and I've tightened the other two. The belts are all fairly new maybe 2 years old. Alternator belt still has bright NAPA logo visible. Like I said cognitive disconnect on this one. (JM&J I do miss the days when you and two of your friends could climb into the engine compartment and work on your car. ) Thanks for any suggestions.

Welcome aboard BTW.

So it is or isn't starting? no starter action? How's the battery?

Also take a look at the clutch interlock relay, I believe in the engine compartment. Remember all similar-spec'd relays(identified by color typically) can be swapped around, so use that as a tool to help you diagnose. The only relays near that buzzing that I can think of is an AC or blower relay. In the S13 there's a diode pack behind the radio and to the left. Some S14 gurus can fill that in.

You can bypass your clutch interlock by jumpering across that wire connector (at the switch at the end of the pedal throw). I don't think this will help you much in your case. Isolate that buzzing.

It is intermittent, a mechanics nightmare, It only buzzes if the ignition doesn't engage the starter. You can keep trying and eventually the buzer sound stops when the starter is engaged. However, it doesn't buzz everytime it fails to engage the starter. Sometimes there is no sound at all, just the key turning in the ignition. The sound is under the dash to the right of the steering column. At first I though it was in the column or close to the igniton. I can't see anything there but it could be covered up. It reminds me of one of those old key buzzers. Forget the key and it buzzed. A raucous sound, not the pleasant ding, ding or a cultured voice saying, I believe you've neglected to remove your keys from my ignition. Please do so at all possible speed.

Today I found pieces of the plastic pad from the back of the clutch pedal. I don't know how long it's been broken but it seeemed intact the other night when I looked at /felt it. The surface and circumference seemed to be intact at that time. There is just half of it still attached. I noticed that the center has an open depression almost like a hole opened up. That may be why it broke apart and why this problem began, however, I am still puzzled as to why it duplicated the problem when I held the plunger down with my hand and turned the key, several times with either the buzzer sound or silence. A trip to the dealer, wahoo. . For the past two days it started almost everytime. If it failed I just punched down the clutch again and it usually started on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. I've spent the larger ammount of time getting rid of a belt squeal at about 3500 rpm. I thinik it was the alternator belt, but I tightened the water pump belt again too. I was under the car so why not?

Have you ever seen a full size van B250 work van fall off of a lift? Not a pretty sight but it made one heck of a splat. Sorry sir, another one of those coming up fresh right now. Take just a minute.
