I know to get rid of the rattling, you have to take out the chain guides. But what if you only take out the top guide? Any significant problem?

hmm, im not sure if there would be a problem. Your chain might still rattle b/c u removed the wrong guide? i know that neither of the two is actually needed since NISSAN themselves recommended removing them since they can break apart over time and fall to the bottom.

Sorry to jack this thread real quick but what about 90 240sx chain guides? I still have two on and when I accelerate hard or go up hill I hear a rattle and have both chain guides on.

90 240 is a different set up it requires both those guides. However if it is rattling you may have a broken guide or weak tensioner. Or it could be detination [pinging].

I just recently rebuilt my motor. I didn't use the top guides as per nissan. Now sometimes at idle you hear the rattling and sometimes it's not there. It's driving me crazy.

As far as any problems, I don't think there is any, except for the rattling noise.

I plan on selling it soon, but since I'm gonna replace the valve cover gasket, i figured I'd take out that top guide while I'm there.
