94Z OEM Bose system - no sound!

I'm a noob in this board, please redirect if this topic has already been covered.

My OEM Bose system has no sound! The power works, the CD unit plays but I get no sound at all. Occasionally when the sound kicks in, the sound is great with all speakers working - its an all-or-none scenario, lately its nothing at all.

If I get a new after market system - CD/radio - what do I need to do/buy in addition? I've been to a couple of shops and they all want to rewire all the way to the speakers, bypassing the amps - is this necessary? Should I consider getting new speakers?

All I want to do is buy some low-end system so I can listen to music again... HELP!!!
