Have you tried any additives? Lucas makes aprety stout honey-like additive. I have used it in several cars.
I got 35,000 miles out of my old '93 Honda, changing the oil every 10,000 miles, and adding a $6 bottle. It drove fairly normal for about 5,000 miles, then I would nurse it for about 5,000 miles, and do the exchange. When I sold the car, it was still runing fine. I gave the new owner a new bottle of it, and one for the motor oil, as well.
Another thing I do, is pop the car in N, at every red light, and any time you are coasting, to eliminate the slipping at low RPM's. I am not sure this makes a big difference, but I have 63,000 miles on my cheap $1,900 transmission rebuild in my '94 Q
