Hi,I'm having trouble with the transmission in my 94Q. It won't shift into third. It shifts from first to second fine, and if I let off the gas enough, it will shift to overdrive. It's got 134,000 miles on it, and I just had it flushed at 130,000. I ran the transmission diagnostic, and it reported Ok. Any ideas what might be wrong and whether I need a whole transmission or just some repairs to the current one?

Thanks

When you had it flushed did they drop the pan and clean or replace the filter? If not the flush could have helped to clog the internal filter. Maybe you will be lucky and that is it -- time to drop the pan.

What about a flush every 30k? [30,60,90 etc] waiting till 130k is sure to be too little to late.Does it go into 3rd gear when manually shifted to 3rd? What does Consult say about solenoid commands!

Let off the gas enough, of course it shifts to 4th for fuel economy?

Don't drive until you do the pan drop screen replacement. I would also flush the heat exchanger in the radiator with the Infiniti solution, or install a B&M 70268 cooler without the heat exchanger in the circuit.

Look at http://www.infinitipartsusa.com for the pan, screen, and one time use screws. Carparts and others carry the cooler. Search the posts.

I also have a 94 Q, I am going to have maint done in a couple of months, it is sitting now due to the winter, anyway I asked the Infiniti dealer about dropping the pan, he said we usually don't do that but we can and clean the scree. My question is 1. Is cleaning the screen ok, or should I insist on replacing it?? 2. Do they flush the system 1st and then drop the pan, or do you drop the pan and then flush it? I would think if you flush it first, then drop the pan, you would end up with a clean screen but what do I know!! Wayne

1) insist on a new screen, they are not that expensive and I dont think they can really be cleaned effectively.

2)they ussually do b) to save on fluid but I prefer first flush then pan drop.

Cleaning the screen is kind of like reusing an oil or fuel filter. Filters wear out (filter only larger particles over time). The labor will run you maybe $200 or more at a dealer just to drop the pan, and I think the filter is less than $20. Heck, the labor they save on not having to clean the old one should pay for the new filter. That's a silly offer IMO. I would flush it first, but of course that will cost more in fluid. Not a big deal.

Thanks for confirming which comes first flush or screen. I really wanted you guys opionions because alot of time it seems like the service dept only thinks about is what is the easiest for them and the most expensive for me. I will insist on a new filter, after the flush. Wayne Fred congrats on your new set of wheels!! Sharp!!

Funny, the dealer here stopped doing only the flush because of clogged filters. Scottsdale has the filter/gasket kit on-line -- arm yourself with the price to make sure that your dealer is not too high on the parts.

Well, finally heard from the dealer today. They said something about the clutch in the transmission. I'll find out exactly when I go and pick it up.

As for regular flushing, it has gotten them every 30K, but apperently that wasn't enough. And it wouldn't shift up past 2nd no matter what. Looks like I'll have to get a re-manned one and make sure to add a transmission cooler.

Thanks for all the advice.

Well,

Here's the diagnsis from the dealer:

Revolution Sensor within spec0 PSI Reverse line PressureStall 125 PSI(NG)Drive line pressures 55-65PSI (LOW-NG)Stall 155 PSI

They said it sounds like a blockage in the control valve assembly. But that with 0 PSI the lack of pressure may have burned up a clutch pack, but there is no way to tell (without disassembling the transmission). Anyone think it's still worth trying a flush? Or should I just go and grab a transmission and save the $100 from the flush?

I vote for stepping up to the replacement transmission with no intermediate stops.

Can anyone tell me if the transmission used in the 94 Q45 was used in any other Nissan/Infiniti vehicles (maybe QX4)?

Thanks

Upselling you *is* their business. Primary job of a service writer other than customer point-of-contact is to sell you extras. They're not bad people (necessarily), but that's the way the system works.

A service writer who's good at upselling at a busy dealership can make upwards of $50K a year. If he can't upsell, he'll starve.

A little off-topic there, I guess.

Did I miss it or did he have it done? I bet there is a reason for zero pressure reading.

Wonder if it is too late, or if a new screen will restore some function?
