Well just like the title says I went out to get dinner the other night and when I came out to leave the car will start but I get no brake lights and cannot get the car out of park.

I did some searching on here and saw that most suggested with this type of problem that it might be the stop lamp switch above the brake pedal. I got one from autozone last night and had a heck of a time getting the old out and the new in and it didn't change anything.

I still get no click at the shifter to indicate that it is unlocking it and no brake lights. I have also checked the brake light 10 amp fuse under the hood and it isn't that. I am at a loss right now and need some help. The car is currently sitting in the Chipotle parking lot but I don't know how much longer they are going to put up with it. :frown:

If you guys have any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

You can use the shift lock override to get your car going until you figure out why the lock isn't disengaging.

There is a little plastic piece in the upper right corner of your shifter gate (the piece with PRND21) on it. Pry this little plastic cover off and underneath there will be a small philips screw. Unscrew that and remove the plastic cover that it was holding down. Under this, there wil be a recessed button. Push that in with an appropriate tool that will fit in there to push it down and your car should let you our of park.

For troubleshooting your shift lock system, read up in the Service Manual, which can be found here:

Open AT.pdf for the automatic transmission section. The instructions for the shift lock override are in there too.

Thanks for the reply I took a look at the shift lock override to make sure I could get it back home.

Luckily I was able to get the issue solved for the most part. I was able to trace back from the fuse block a problem with the right side brake light. I took out one of the bulbs and the bottom of it was melted. I am going to replace the assembly and try and see if that fixes it.

The good thing is it at least runs and drives for the time being without a right side light. :poke:
