Trying to get the steering rack out of my girlfriend's 1994 Q45 as it's been leaking like crazy all over my driveway. I have all 4 mounting bolts, the control valve's electrical connector, the two bushings, and the fluid lines disconnected and moved out of the way, but I still haven't found a good way to maneuver the steering rack out in one piece. Has anyone else here gone through this process and have any tips on how I can get it out short of dropping the entire crossmember? If not, how should I go about dropping the front crossmember?

:welcome: to NICO!

I (fortunately) haven't done this job myself. The factory service manual for the car is available at www.infinitiservicemanual.com - and although I didn't see anything in there about a step by step to remove the rack, it has a diagram that may be helpful.

I did read the FSM before beginning this job not realizing how difficult it would be to get the rack out. Unfortunately the parts diagram hasn't been too helpful. Took a break from it today, but I'll get back at it tomorrow to see if I can figure anything out.

It's always good to take a break before you get to the "hammer through the windshield" stage.

I ended up figuring out the trick to get enough clearance to remove the rack -- I had to jack up the engine from underneath the transmission bell housing as high as it could go. Much easier than removing the lower crossmember! Now that the new rack is in, it's time to reconnect everything, fill it up with fluid, and go get an alignment. Will give an update if anything else comes up.

Thanks for the update! I hope it doesn't come in handy one day.

Well, I sold the car a while ago and had no issues with it for a year -- so I assume the rebuilt rack I got is in the clear :)
