I just recently purchased my Q, I am not driving in the winter, yesterday was a warm day up here in the tundra so I decided to fix one of the fog lamps. I had the bottom cover off and I looked to see where the oil filter is, I have always changed my own oil and oil filter. I could barely get my hand around and up and then could barely touch it, let alone get a filter wrench on it. There has to be something Iam missing here, how do you change the filter??? It looks next to impossible, I know there is something I am overlooking here!! thanks Wayne

You aren't overlooking anything. The way to change the filter is from below w/ the plastic shorud off (of course) and you contorting to reach the filter.

It is not easy to change the filter by any means. Some PPL cheat and take off the intake and do it from the top, risking damage to the MAF connector among others (which can result in all sorts of funky symptoms), which is not the recommended way.

Sorry i didnt have any better news.

It is possible to get a filter wrench around it just a lot of trial and error especially the first few times you do it.

Fred...:)

what you need is the right filter wrench the kind that fits onto the end of the filter and engages the flats/dimples put there for that purpose. No other 'wrench' works worth a damn (IMHO).

Costs a couple of bucks--go to Autozone or Oriley's, get a new filter, and hunt through the array of filter wrenches to fine the right one. Then it's just a simple miserable job.

i take the top off the airbox so i can loosen from the top (a filter wrench thing does work from the top, but i only needed that the first time i changed the oil, i don't over tighten) and then take the filter out through bottom, while scraping the back of my hand up. seems easier to tighten/loosen the filter from the top, but it has to come out the bottom.

I put mine up on ramps. After removing the bottom shroud, you can access the filter.

Here they pick it up in front of my house on garbage day in a drain pan/jug that they gave me aalong with heavy plastic bags for the filter. No charge, one of the benefits of CA EPA whackos!

In CA my understanding is that by state law anyplace that sells oil has to accept used oil from the public for free. Part of the fees they charge you when you buy the oil initially.
