I'm going to do my first oil change tomorrow night and I'd like to verify the amount of oil I should buy. I will be changing the filter too. The dealer said between 6-6.5 quarts depending on how much drains?? I definitely don't want to drastically over- or under-fill. I searched a few times, but didn't find any posts with this info.

Fred,I have also heard that the earlier manuals suggested more than 6.000000000000000 quarts, however I just checked my 96 FSM and it states 6 and 3/8 quarts with filter change, what gives?

My 94 SM says same but,

It's 6 quarts.

Test:

-drain the oil completely.-Add 6 quarts and you will be at the full mark or slightly over.

I usually even add only 5 2/3rds, to make sure I dont overfill and then add just enough extra to bring it up.Often there is still a small amount left out of a 6 quart pack.

maybe i need to drain some oil, i've always done what the manual says. it's just that for whatever reason i am unable to read the oil level on the dipstick (of any car i've owned). i can tell oil is there, but i just can't figure out the oil level on the damn dipstick (i must be an idiot). i love the sight window on my motorcycle, just look through a piece of glass and see the level.

I have found the best way to read the oil level is to do it while cold..... It is easier to see since the oil is thicker..... And even if the oil does expand when it is run, if its at the top, you know its too high, and if its near the bottom, its too low......

After the Envirolution crankcase flush, mine took about 6.5 Qts. Only takes 6 qts. on regular drain and filter change.

If you tilt the car so that the drain hole is the lowest and wait 24 hours for the last drop to fall yoiu really might get 6.5 quarts out.

Don't assume that lifts are level or the floor is level or the car is perfect allowing every tiny drop to get out...plus what about the surface area inside engine where the molecular thin oil still sits.Pretty hard to get even 95% of old oil out.

There were also 2 different dip sticks in use which do you have the correct one or the one changed to show a 1/4 quart difference..............not labeled so you can't tell the difference.

sultan: also remember to check it after the car's been sitting for at least a couple/few hours so all the oil drains back in to the pan from the heads. You might check it too early and think you're low when maybe you're really not.

I find its easier to get a readable view of the oil level if you check it cold. Also, you need to check both sides of the dipstick, and do it three or four times, (wiping the stick clean each time, naturally). I find that the oil will often smear on the dipstick, and if the backside reading shows a clean spot down lower, the lower reading is usually right.

*********Strange story dept: Years ago I drove our 67 LeMans home from college , about 350 miles. The car began to simply become unresponive to the throttle (on the PA turnpike) and then very gradually slow down, as the temp gauge rose. Got to where it wouldnt make minimum speed. After stopping for say 20-35 minutes, started right up and seemed ok until it started to slow again.

Well, I limped it all the way home, took it to my Dad's mechanic, described the symptoms, and watched him listen to the engine, and then check the oil. The first dip and the second gave a reading, but subsequent dips came out bone dry. I don't remember how much it was low, but it was amazing that he knew immediately what the problem was, and that I hadn't caused any damage to the engine with my 19 year old ignorance. It was also amazing that the damned oil light didn't come on during the trip other than at the very end on a steep hill, for just a moment.

No oil light is what happens when you have a less than 3 psi turn on point...............a 14 psi switch would be great if we could find one.

SO TRUE!

This happens to many members and can lead to need less overfill.
