I find its easier to get a readable view of the oil level if you check it cold. Also, you need to check both sides of the dipstick, and do it three or four times, (wiping the stick clean each time, naturally). I find that the oil will often smear on the dipstick, and if the backside reading shows a clean spot down lower, the lower reading is usually right.
*********Strange story dept: Years ago I drove our 67 LeMans home from college , about 350 miles. The car began to simply become unresponive to the throttle (on the PA turnpike) and then very gradually slow down, as the temp gauge rose. Got to where it wouldnt make minimum speed. After stopping for say 20-35 minutes, started right up and seemed ok until it started to slow again.
Well, I limped it all the way home, took it to my Dad's mechanic, described the symptoms, and watched him listen to the engine, and then check the oil. The first dip and the second gave a reading, but subsequent dips came out bone dry. I don't remember how much it was low, but it was amazing that he knew immediately what the problem was, and that I hadn't caused any damage to the engine with my 19 year old ignorance. It was also amazing that the damned oil light didn't come on during the trip other than at the very end on a steep hill, for just a moment.
