To test... park the car on a level with wheels straight and steering locked. Squat down and grip the tire (hook your fingers in the treads) on opposite ends. In other words, you're hands will be as far apart as possible on the tire. Rock gently yet firmly... If wheel bearing is bad, a slight play will be felt at point of hub. No play whatsoever = good wheel bearing.
Bad wheel bearings = tire wear as there is no way to align properly.
PS: I have had my drivers side wheel bearing replaced. Must be pressed off/on by a shop.
