is leaking. I know it can be replaced but was advised by a mechanic that when it leaks it signals something else going wrong. It may work for a week or two but then leak again. He said I may need a front pump. The trans does slip a little and fails to fully engage when cold and in Drive. But if I shift to 3 it engages firmly and quick. I have owned the car about 2 years and it has 168K on it. I got it with 134K on it and have been taking care of the trans with changes and flushes. Guess the previous owner was not so carefull. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Also when it leaks it must be dripping on the exhaust as I see smoke coming up.

Without serious maintenance it is rare for 90-96 transmissions to last much beyond 150k...........we do have a few 200k+ late model customers who primarily do all highway driving.

Shifts per mile and how it's treated when cold............allowed to warm up of driven right away from cranking in winter.

Who can complain about 168K when the legal life of a car is 100k.

Why cars at 100k are worth less than 30 cents [some less than 20 cents] on the new MSRP dollar. 70% of the cheap miles are gone.

All you can do is a pan drop, magnet clean, filter replacement, front heat exchanger clean out/filter replacement and fluid exchange with BG cleaner and BG conditioner.

If you plan on keeping the car another 100k then a Nissan/Jatco reman at $3,000 is pretty cost effective @ $500 per year plus interest.

The first thing I did when I bought it 2 years ago is have the transmission flushed, supposedly fully. Had it done also last August before my trip from LaLa land back to NJ, my home. Now this is the strange part so bear with me. I had always had this vibration at around 2G's. I replaced motor and transmission mounts, new drive shaft, under plenum service, basically everything needed. Never got rid of the vibe. It would always manifest itself in the interior rear view mirror. Shook bad. Well since this little problem with my trans, I put 2 quarts (yes it was very low indeed) in of DexronIII. My slipping is about gone now. It shifts crisply at a better RPM then before. And what is really weird is the vibration has almost ceased. I am going to replaced all the fluid in stages and see how much better it gets. There is still a wisp of smoke from the leaking seal but it has dissipated some. When I read in here of people using Mobil One syn. are they speaking of the Oil or is there a Mobil One trans fluid? Thanks
