So, I have a '94 Q with a fully functional original Bose system. I like it, but the opportunity to pick up a new head unit with a touchscreen is something I'm going to have a hard time passing up. I know about the adapters to take the levels to where I can keep my Bose speakers, which is definitely the plan for me here as none of them are blown or have any issues. The big question though, is what kind of stereo to look at picking up.

Has anyone else done this, and what's your experience with having a touchscreen in that particular position?

If you do a search you'll find some threads with some great info. Also, another option is to check out the gallery pics and ask the members you have upgraded stereos.

For example, here is mxr662's setup:

Yeah, I'd done some searches and looked around a bit but wasn't finding anything particularly helpful in regards to what I'm really wondering about - usability of a screen in that position, and suggestions of any particular current models that might be on the shelves. Most of the units people here are likely to have, unless they installed it within the last year, aren't going to be available any more. The technical know-how isn't a problem at all, but I do appreciate your reply as it does a good job of highlighting a number of good sources of information here on the forum that people might look for in the future.

Search here, IMO, sucks.

I did a lot of thinking over the weekend, and it's looking like I won't be doing anything just yet (sorry, rabsusa) - because I think I'm going to aim higher in regards to my plans. It may take me a number of months, but my partner and I are currently working on a new Consult software package in C#, and may attempt integrating it (or components of it) into a CarPC system we'd have to custom build. The big question at that point is all about usability, whether a screen in that position and at that angle has been easy for people to use while driving. It looks decent to me, and I think the Q would look quite good with a flat surface in that spot.

One thing that really sucks about most car stereos today, is that even the touchscreens often come with chrome trim and dials that look completely out of place in a Q.
