If I try to start my Q for more than 30 seconds, the starter(new) will turn but not engage. Even if I wait for a long period of time to cool down, the starter will remain in this mode of operation. Is this a thermal protection situation; and if so, how do I get it to reset? Disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it did nothing.

the starting system from what i can figure out in the diagrams and from what ive delt with, does not have a thermal protector on the system.

how about checking the alignment of the starter? thats the only thing i could think of that would cause this

Yes that is what my starter did a little while back.

It turned but didn't extend out and engage.

Don't exactly know but could it be starving for more voltage???

Starting motor spins fine but no engagement. I am thinking that there was damage to the engagement mechanism when the engine bucked during starting. This is the second time I have had this situation off of a flooded engine. Does anyone know if this starter has an over-run clutch to protect it? I imagine not.

Just a starter identical to every V8- V12 starter in the world..............built better than typical US units with better materials but same design. The brushes are 40% longer why it lasts longer.
