I had been eying an old Pathfinder behind a house in the woods not far from my home. I finally saw someone outside one day so I stopped to ask about the Pathfinder. It turned out that it was parked there by his daughter when she bought a new car. It sat there for 12 years as a squirrel home.
$300 dollars later my son bought it so we took a chainsaw to liberate it from the trees that had grown around it. We also took a tow strap and an air compressor and all four tires were holding air.

We got it home and removed all of the interior as it was all covered in squirrel poo. The carpet is shot but miraculously the seats cleaned up nicely. We finally got to a point where we could start working on it.

A look in the fuel tank and removing an almost full load of old fuel revealed that the fuel pump and tank would have to be replaced as well as the rubber fuel hoses.

So a few days ago we installed the tank and pump and cleaned out the metal fuel hoses to install new rubber lines. We also replaced the chewed spark plug wires.

We installed a battery and turned the motor over with the coil wire removed and in a few seconds the oil light went off. So I hooked up spark and turned the key to on until the fuel pump quit and turned the key. It fired right up and stumbled for a few seconds and then settled into a nice idle. It was great to finally verify that it would run.

So now we’re working on more cleaning of the a/c ductwork and blower motor and I removed the acorns from the bottom of the airbox.

My question is about the throttle body. Everytime you push the throttle it would stick and then let loose. It is very annoying and makes it hard to drive.
So I lubricated the throttle and cables and removed and cleaned the throttle body and lubed the springs and the pivot rod. The problem was reduced but not eliminated.

I noticed that the plate in the throttle body closes completely. I also noticed that there is a small hole in the throttle stop on the throttle body. Is something missing there? I put a small brad in the hole and it slightly opens the plate and eliminates the sticking problem. Am a missing a part that would allow adjustment or is there just a small piece of plastic or rubber that has perished and allowed the valve to close completely? It runs without it but idles slightly higher with the brad installed.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I used to have a '91 XE Pathfinder. I don't recall what you are describing, but if you can post a picture here, that might jog my memory. Does anything in this blown up view look familiar to what you are referring to?

Thanks for the reply and the diagram. It may have given me a clue. Mine is a 94 SE. Unfortunately it is almost dark and snowing outside so I’m gonna look at it tomorrow and compare to the diagram. Cheers!
