94 Pathfinder, no sound

With the factory stereo installed there is no sound, not even static, but power was fine. Thinking it was the stereo, I bought a new Sony unit and installed it. Still, no sound. Is there an internal amp and if so where is it located? Could the internal amp be the problem? Thanks!
