94 pathfinder, auto trans, transfer case question

Had to put my 94 pathfinder on a car dolly yesterday to take to shop to have engine swapped, put auto transmission in neutral and went to put transfer case in neutral as well since rear wheels would still be on ground, pulled transfer case shifter back to neutral and wheels would not turn freely, checked underneath and front and rear driveshafts were trying to turn as if it was in 4 wheel high or low. Yes I know how to operate the shifter. the only way to get transfer case in neutral was to move the shifter slightly forward of the neutral spot. Did not want to tow the truck this way fearing hitting a bump would make the shifter move rearward causing the tires to lock as I was towing it. Question is, is the transfer case shifter adjustable anywhere so neural is actually neutral?? Did not see anything in the FSM about this but I will look at it again. Thanks
