History: brought car 4 yrs ago with 77k miles and the only problem I had then was "clicking" noise especially braking going downhill - tension rods replaced(DIY)... fixed that problem.

2 yrs ago: radio/cd had "err message" - unit sent to Florida for overhaul, unit works better now but sometimes "err" message appears again, thinking about buying an aftermarket sound unit

at about 120k miles - spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, & PVC replaced (DIY)Problem started after a timing belt and all the outside belts replaced by Dealer. A very loud "hissing" at the front of engine when i started the car. I thought it' normal because of new belts so I didn't do anything about it. It got louder and warranty expired. Now the "hissing" sound is gone but the noise coming from the fron engine is permanently just loud.

Recently at about 160k miles - took to Dealer and have it checked(cost - $190).Result from code: bad knock sensor but to check the noise coming from front engine, they have to open the front cover... cost over $600 just to see what make that noise.

I paid the $190 and declined the $600 job... too much for me!

I think to myself when they changed the timing belt, they didn't change the water pump, pulley idlers, tensioner, cam seals and maybe that might the cause of engine noise.

Also, from reading the posts on transmission shift stuck on 1st or 2nd gear and rev to 3-4k rpm and i thought i have revolution sensor failure. Plus the ATF light flashing when I turned on the engine. So last weekend I did a pan drop with the filter replaced and change to Mobil 1 synth. ATF and the engine oil to Mobil 1 synth. I was going to replace the sensor but don't know where it located. But the transmission is fine now. Should I change the sensor anyway? And where it's located????

I should have maintain my j30t better. All these years I just changed the engine oil and replaced brake pads. From reading what ppl posted in here help me alot - take better care of my car.

I plan to do major work on my car. Brought all the parts already: water pump, pulley idlers, tensioner, all four struts(car very bumping right now), oxygen sensors, knock sensor..

any suggestions and can someone tell me where the revolution sensor is located? thank you very much..

I wouldn't advise changing the rev sensor yourself. Firstly, you basically have to unbolt the transmission and dissemble part of it and secondly it requires some ECU programming that only Infiniti dealers and/or select transmission shops can do to make sure the transmission solenoids and rev sensor work smoothly in tandem.

driverdriver,

Thanks for your info. Very helpful in understanding more about my car. Definitely, that sounds like something I can't do by myself. Yeah, I also going to replace the transmission seal while I have the dealer replace the sensor. I think the old ATF's eating up the seal and now transmission has some leaks. I read somewhere in here that replacing the transmission seal will cost me about 5-6 hours of labor. Is this true?? thanks

I have no clue in regards to the seals, maybe one of the J30 members from the southern climes might chip in with insight. Its more of an issue in warmer climates than up here in the great white north.

I would also recommend a transmission cooler for your car. J30 transmission have a shorter life in warmer climates.
