94 j30 reverse doesnt engage

[1994 infiniti j30 190+]

i need some help with my j!! please.

yesterday i was driving my j and i had just parked it at our house then i went to leave and the car wouldnt shift into reverse at all. it shifts into all other gears but reverse. what could be the problem?? would i need a new transmission or is it an easy/somewhat easy fix??

I can't remember exactly, its been a number of years since I looked at the gear shift mechanism in the J, but I think there is some sort of clip for each transmission gear. Your's might be broken preventing reverse.

I have a 95 j with the same problem. I have driven the car for over a year like this and would love to find a diy fix to get me going in the right direction-backwards! I have had the shifter box out but could not find anything obviously broken.Has anyone done this repair? Any info,pics,to help me with this repair would be greatly appreciated. I feel like the transmission itself is sound since I`ve driven the car over 20k without reverse.

sorry im a bit late, i did finish and fix my transmission and when me and my dad rebuilt it (after attempting to get one from the junkyard in the mean time and found out that one was destroyed) we found out that the band strut had desinagrated into shavings and got stuck on the magnet attached to the pan. so in order to fix it, we got that piece out of the transmission we got from the junkyard and put it in and it worked perfect. thats how i fixed mine so it could be that for you but not sure.
